All of the parties at Queen’s Park are promoting Universal daycare, which is awesome. However, it’s not enough. Yes, $10 a day daycare is great but that’s $217 a month. How can a full-time single parent who earns minimum wage survive?

I was raised by my mother, who was a single parent. She would constantly pick up the midnight shift to earn extra money just so my two brothers and I would have a safe place to lay our heads and food on the table. I don’t support a government that allows single parents to struggle against all odds just to make ends ALMOST meet.

A full time minimum wage worker

who works 40 hours a week, makes $2,058 after deductions. The average two-bedroom apartment in Kingston costs $1,689.  Add daycare to that and there would only be $152 to pay for food, clothes, internet, etc… So please tell me how $10 a day, daycare are going to help a single parent minimum wage worker?

And rent is only getting more expensive. According to a report released just this past month, the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment increased by 10% to $1,689.

We need universal daycare and a living wage. Affordability is one of my hot button issues and it’s a big part of the reason I got involved in politics. Having watched my mother struggle to raise me and my brothers, I can not sit by and allow our government to be missing in action. If I get the opportunity to be a candidate for next year’s Ontario election, I will champion universal daycare and living wage on the campaign trail.  And, should I be elected as Kingston and The Islands next MPP, I will champion it in Queens Park too. I guarantee that I will push for a living wage and universal daycare right from day one.

Together let’s break down the barriers holding single parents back and let’s help them build a better future for themselves and their families.
